Passport & Travel Requirements for Costa Rica

For U.S. citizens traveling to Costa Rica and returning to the United States, please keep the following in mind:

Passport Requirements: Your passport must be valid at the time of both entry and exit from Costa Rica. If your passport expires within six months of your travel date, it may not be considered valid.

Customs & Immigration: You will clear U.S. Customs and Immigration at your first point of entry in the United States. Costa Rica does not have U.S. Customs pre-clearance, so allow extra time for this upon arrival back in the U.S.

Travel Documents: Retain the immigration card provided upon entry to Costa Rica, as you may need to present it when departing. Costa Rica also requires proof of onward travel, such as a return ticket or a ticket to another destination, before allowing entry.

Health & Safety: It is strongly recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, as some advanced medical procedures may require transportation to the U.S. Carry prescription medications in their original packaging along with a doctor’s note.

For updated details and requirements, including for non-U.S. citizens, visit the U.S. Department of State’s travel page for Costa Rica.

Currency

U.S. dollars are widely accepted in Costa Rica, but having some Costa Rican colóns is helpful for smaller purchases, such as taxis or market vendors. Credit and debit cards are commonly accepted, and ATMs are widely available. For convenience, you can exchange money at banks, ATMs, or currency exchange offices as needed.

Weather in March

March is the dry season in Guanacaste, offering warm temperatures ranging from 24°C to 35°C (75°F to 95°F). The days are sunny and dry, perfect for beach outings and outdoor adventures, while evenings are warm and pleasant.
