Passport & Travel Requirements for Costa Rica

  • Your passport must be valid at the time of both entry and exit. If your passport expires within six months of travel, it may not be accepted.
  • Retain the immigration card provided upon entry—you may need it when departing.
  • Proof of onward travel (return or onward ticket) is required for entry.
  • Upon return to the U.S., you will clear U.S. Customs and Immigration at your first point of entry.
  • Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is highly recommended.
  • Bring prescription medications in original containers with a doctor’s note.

Currency

U.S. dollars are widely accepted in Costa Rica, though small purchases may require Costa Rican colóns (CRC). Credit cards are commonly accepted, and ATMs are readily available.
