Passport and Entry Requirements for The Bahamas

For U.S. citizens traveling to The Bahamas and returning to the United States, the following guidelines are essential:

  • Passport Requirements: U.S. citizens traveling to The Bahamas are required to have a valid passport. While The Bahamas generally requires passports to be valid for the duration of stay, many airlines require having at least six months of passport validity beyond your travel dates.
  • Customs and Immigration: Travelers will clear U.S. Customs and Immigration at their first point of entry back into the United States. Be sure to keep your passport and travel documents easily accessible.
  • Travel Documents: Proof of onward or return travel may be requested upon entry. Retain any entry documentation provided until departure.
  • Health and Safety: Travel insurance that includes medical coverage and medical evacuation is recommended. Always carry prescription medications in their original packaging along with your physician’s prescription.

Transportation

Air Travel: The easiest way to reach Atlantis is by flying into Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in Nassau. Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island is approximately a 30 to 40-minute drive from the airport, depending on traffic.

Taxis: Taxis are readily available outside the airport terminal. Typical zone fares to Paradise Island are approximately $45 USD, plus a small bridge toll. Additional charges may apply for extra passengers or luggage. A 15% tip is customary.

Buses (Jitneys): Public buses, known locally as jitneys, are an inexpensive way to explore Nassau. Fares are typically about $1.50 per person (exact change required). Jitneys do not generally run directly to Atlantis but can be useful for exploring downtown Nassau or Cable Beach.

Currency

The Bahamian Dollar (BSD) is pegged to the U.S. Dollar (USD) at a 1:1 value, and U.S. dollars are widely accepted throughout Nassau and Paradise Island. Credit cards are commonly accepted. If you pay in USD, you may receive change in BSD, so plan to use any remaining local currency before departing.

Weather

April is an excellent time to visit Paradise Island, with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Expect daytime highs in the low-to-mid 80s°F (27–29°C) and evening temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s°F (23–25°C). Pack light resort wear, a light sweater for air-conditioned meeting rooms, and sun protection for outdoor activities.
