Passport & Travel Requirements for Costa Rica
Passport Requirements: Your passport must be valid at the time of both entry and exit from Costa Rica. If your passport expires within six months of your travel date, it may not be considered valid.
Customs & Immigration: You will clear U.S. Customs and Immigration at your first point of entry in the United States. Costa Rica does not have U.S. Customs pre-clearance, so allow extra time upon return.
Travel Documents: Retain the immigration card provided upon entry to Costa Rica, as you may need to present it when departing. Proof of onward travel (return or onward ticket) is required for entry.
Health & Safety: Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended. Carry prescription medications in their original packaging along with a doctor’s note.
For updated requirements, including for non-U.S. citizens, visit the U.S. Department of State’s travel page for Costa Rica.
Currency
U.S. dollars are widely accepted in Costa Rica, but having some Costa Rican colóns (CRC) is helpful for smaller purchases. Credit/debit cards are commonly accepted, and ATMs are widely available. Currency can be exchanged at banks, ATMs, or currency exchange offices.
