Passport & Travel Requirements for Costa Rica
- Your passport must be valid at the time of both entry and exit. If your passport expires within six months of travel, it may not be accepted.
- Retain the immigration card provided upon entry—you may need it when departing.
- Proof of onward travel (return or onward ticket) is required for entry.
- Upon return to the U.S., you will clear U.S. Customs and Immigration at your first point of entry.
- Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is highly recommended.
- Bring prescription medications in original containers with a doctor’s note.

Currency
U.S. dollars are widely accepted in Costa Rica, though having some Costa Rican colóns (CRC) is helpful for small purchases. ATMs are easily accessible, and credit/debit cards are widely accepted.
