Passport and Travel Requirements for Costa Rica
For U.S. citizens departing from Costa Rica and returning to the United States, the following guidelines are essential:
- Passport Requirements: Americans traveling to Costa Rica must possess a valid passport at the time of entry and time of exit. Ensure your passport expiration date is not within 6 months of travel or it will not be considered a valid form of identification.
- Customs and Immigration: You will clear U.S. Customs and Immigration at your first point of entry in the United States. Make sure to have all necessary travel documents ready, including your passport and any required declarations. Costa Rica does not have U.S. Customs pre-clearance, so this process will take place upon arrival in the U.S.
- Travel Documents: Ensure you retain your immigration card provided upon entry to Costa Rica, as you may be required to present it to an Immigration Officer upon departure. Additionally, travelers must show proof of onward travel, such as a return ticket or a ticket to another destination, as Costa Rica requires proof that you’ll be leaving the country before your visa or tourist stay expires.
- Health and Safety: It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, as some medical procedures may require transportation to the United Sates for critical care. Always carry prescription medications in their original packaging along with your doctor’s prescription.
For more detailed and updated information (and for travel for non-USA citizens), you can visit the
Costa Rica Entry Requirements & Customs Page.
Currency
Travelers to Costa Rica do not need to exchange your money before arriving. U.S. dollars are widely accepted. However, it’s a good idea to have some Costa Rican colóns for smaller purchases, like taxis or street vendors, as remote areas and small businesses may not accept cards or foreign currency. Credit and debit cards are commonly accepted, but you can also exchange money at banks, ATMs, or currency exchange offices if needed. Having a mix of colóns and dollars is a smart approach for a smooth travel experience.
