Passport and Travel Requirements for Mexico

For U.S. citizens traveling to Cancun and returning to the United States, please note the following guidelines:

  1. Passport Requirements: A valid passport is required for entry into Mexico. Ensure your passport expiration date is not within 6 months of travel to avoid any issues with your travel documents.
  2. Customs and Immigration: Upon arrival in Cancun, you will pass through Mexican customs and immigration. Be sure to complete the immigration form (FMM) provided on your flight, which you must keep with you throughout your stay. This form will be required when you depart from Mexico.
  3. Tourist Card: Mexico requires all visitors to have a tourist card (FMM), which is typically issued upon arrival at no additional charge. You may be required to show this card upon departure, so keep it in a safe place.
  4. Health and Safety: It is highly recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. In case of an emergency, you may need to be transported to the U.S. or another nearby country for critical care. Carry your prescription medications in their original packaging, accompanied by your doctor’s prescription.
  5. Electronic Devices: Effective immediately, please be aware of the following guidelines concerning the import of electronic devices for travelers to Mexico.

Each traveler is permitted to bring ONE portable computing device (e.g., laptop, notebook, or iPad) without incurring an import fee.

If passengers bring multiple devices, such as a laptop and an iPad, each will be treated as a separate item, which may result in additional fees.

      Allowed Items:
    • 1 laptop or similar portable computing device (e.g., iPad)
    • Limited Items:
    • Up to 3 cell phones
    • 1 GPS
    • 2 cameras
    • 1 pair of binoculars
    • 4 fishing poles

Exceeding these limits may result in customs duties starting at 19% of the item’s estimated value, with some cases reporting fees as high as 200%.

To avoid these potential charges, please adhere to these guidelines.

For more detailed and updated information, visit the U.S. Department of State’s Mexico Country Information Page.

Currency

The local currency in Cancun is the Mexican Peso (MXN). However, U.S. Dollars (USD) are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas. Credit cards are commonly used, but it’s a good idea to carry some pesos for small purchases or tips. ATMs are readily available at the airport and the resort for currency exchange.

Weather

In late October and early November, Cancun enjoys warm tropical weather, making it perfect for both conference sessions and beachside relaxation. Expect daytime temperatures to range from the low 80s to high 80s Fahrenheit (27-31°C) with pleasant evening temperatures in the mid-70s Fahrenheit (23-25°C). Occasional rain showers are possible, but the overall weather is ideal for outdoor activities.
